You can visit Skardu by air or road. The usual road route is through the Karakoram Highway & a link road into the Skardu Valley. Besides, there are around five other road links to Kashmir & Ladakh.
Then, there are two flights between Skardu Airport & Islamabad every day.
Skardu becomes totally snowbound during winters. Usually, the roads leading to & from Skardu (including other Northern Area locations) are blocked for weeks together due to the extreme weather conditions, making travel by air the only possible alternative.
But even air travel during winters can be disrupted as the weather in Skardu is unpredictable & flights tend to get delayed for several days.
